March at Taíno Woods Sanctuary — Preparing the Fire

March at Taíno Woods Sanctuary — Preparing the Fire as we embrace the arrival of Spring, and Yokahu’s rebirth,  🌿🔥

Happy New Year! Yes – The light is returning — not all at once, but gently. You can feel it in the thawing soil, in the river’s steady breath, in the quiet stirring beneath the trees. March is a crossing. Winter has finished its teaching, and something new begins to move.

In the Indigenous way, Spring is the true beginning of the year — when life turns forward again. At the Equinox, the sun stands in balance, day and night meeting as equals. Sky and earth align, reminding us that harmony lives in relationship.

The land is waking. And we wake with her — ready to tend what is beginning again within the soil, within our community, and within ourselves.

The Caney ceremony of Equinox is grounded in the Taino creation story of Yoka Hu (Also known as Yokahu Bagua Maorocoti), The Lord of Yucca. Visit  Miguel Sague for an in-depth explanation of the Taino creation story.

🍄 With Gratitude — Michael’s Mushroom Offering

We extend deep thanks to Michael for sharing his “Grow Your Own Mushrooms” teaching during our Winter Virtual Sanctuary Series.

His offering reminded us that cultivation is ceremony — that tending mycelium beneath the soil mirrors the unseen work we each carry within. Through ecology, nourishment, and practical wisdom, he helped us remember that regeneration begins quietly, patiently, and with intention.

Hahom, Michael, for sharing your medicine and knowledge with our community. 🍄🌿

🏆 A Reminder of Honor — Taino Awards is presenting us with Musicians of the year award!

As we prepare for spring, we continue to hold gratitude for the news that Taíno Woods Sanctuary will receive the Arieto Award – Musicians of the Year on May 9, 2026, at Boricua College in New York.

We will also be performing at the ceremony, offering song as prayer in honor of our Ancestors and community. This recognition belongs to all who drum, sing, serve, and stand with us. All are welcome!

🌸 Spring Equinox Lodge — RSVP Deadline is Approaching

This ceremony is only possible through community support. Our Behike Miguel Sagué Jr. travels over 12 hours to be with us, and we must prepare the land, wood, water, and ceremonial space accordingly.

If we do not reach our minimum registration by March 7, 2026, we will need to cancel this gathering. This will be an indoor ceremony. Please note we may not be able to have a sweat lodge this day due to weather. This deeply immersive ceremony weather permitting includes a purification (sweat)  lodge, storytelling and a collective short dance.
