Medicine Wheel
The Taino Medicine Wheel is similar in many ways to other Native American sacred hoops. In the Caney tradition it is called “Guaiko” and it comprises the most important factor in the Taino Cosmic Geography.
It is bounded by 28 units usually symbolized in the form of stones or “sibas”. The four stones that stand at the four directions are considered to be the four original stones that the Great Spirit cast high into the sky at the beginning of time and that became the four stars of the four directions; Achiano in the South, Koromo in the West, Rakuno in the North and Sobaiko in the East. They represent the four fundamental virtues which the Caney adherent aspires to and which are considered the gifts of each direction. These are Innocence (and open mindedness) in the SOUTH; Introspection in the WEST, the power to look into one’s own soul, understand what one sees there and then from that spiritual vantage point look beyond into the mystery of the spirit world, Wisdom in the NORTH, The elusive gift that can not be achieved without paying the painful price of experience, and Illumination in the EAST, the awakening to enlightenment that happens at the moment of perfect balance.
Each direction is ruled by a spirit who bears the name of that direction’s respective star, ACHIANO, KOROMO,RAKUNO and SOBAIKO. Each has its own color; Green in the SOUTH, Black in the WEST, White in the NORTH and Yellow in the EAST.
Each one has its own sacred bird and its own sacred food mother; The SOUTH is inhabited by a turkey (guanaho),and harvests the green squash. The WEST is inhabited by the owl(mukaro) of nightfall and harvests the black beans. The NORTH is inhabited by the elusive hummingbird(babae) of Wisdom and harvests the white casava bread manufactured from yuca. The EAST is inhabited by the high-flying hawk(guaraguao) and harvests the yellow maize.
La Rueda Sagrada de los Taínos es semejante a las ruedas sagradas de otras culturas indígenas de las Américas. En la tradicion del Circulo Caney se le llama “GUAIKO”. esta comprende el elemento más importante de la geographia cósmica taina.
La Rueda en sí está compuesta de 28 unidades, normalmente representadas por piedras llamadas “sibas”. Cuatro de estas piedras se encuentran en las cuatro posiciones de las direcciones cardinales; Norte, Sur, Este y Oeste. Esas cuatro piedras se identifican con las cuatro piedras legendarias que fueron lanzadas hacia el firmamento por el espíritu creador al principio de los tiempos, y que se convirtieron en estrellas indicando allí en el campo celeste las cuatro direcciones cardinales del cosmo. Esas piedras se llaman Achiano la del SUR, Koromo la del OESTE, Rakuno la del NORTE, y Sobaiko la del ESTE. Representan las cuatro virtudes fundamentales a las cuales todo ser humano aspira. Estas virtudes se consideran los dones que ofrecen los espíritus que residen en cada una de esas direcciones; Mente Abierta en el SUR, Introspección en el OESTE, Sabiduría y Experiencia en el NORTE, Iluminación en el Este.
Cada dirección tiene su regidor, un espíritu que lleva el mismo nombre de la estrella que indica su punto cardinal: ACHIANO, KOROMO, RAKUNO,SOBAIKO. Cada uno lleva su propio color sagrado; Verde en el SUR, Negro en el OESTE, Blanco en el NORTE y Amarillo en el ESTE.
Cada uno tiene su propio pájaro espiritual y una planta alimenticia que representa el alma de esa dirección En el SUR vive el guanajo (guajolote) y crecen las calabazas verdes. En el OESTE vuela el mukaro (buho) y se cosechan los frijoles negros. En el NORTE vibran las alitas de Babae (picaflor) y crece la yuca brava del cual se elabora el casabe blanco(mandioca, tapioca). En el ESTE se alsa hacia el cielo el guaraguao (gavilan) y se da el maiz amarillo.
